Fred Martinez was a 16-year-old Navajo boy who was brutally murdered in 2001 in Colorado. Accepted among his own people, Fred was raised with the Navajo belief that there are four genders: feminine women, masculine men, and men and women with mixed identities like himself. Referred to as a Nadleehi ("one who transforms"), these indigenous LGBT people were respected as counselors, healers, teachers, and foster parents for orphans. The more fortunate "Two Spirits" were recognized early on by elders and brought up in a nurturing environment.
Nibley's documentary tells Fred's tragic story, a girl trapped in a boy's body who was one of the youngest-ever victims of a brutal hate crime.
