The article also provides a history of the Two Spirit movement, from the founding of Gay American Indians in 1975 to the first Two Spirit gathering in Minnesota in the 1990s to the present-day Two Spirit Societies and their function in their rural and urban communities. Other Two Spirit leaders and/or elders featured are John Hawk Co-cke, David Herrera, Marylou Van Voorhis, Storme Webber, Farand Gunnels, and Holy Old Man Bull.
